399 Edgware School

As a result of the public consultation exercises held in November 2005 and after more detailed discussions with Brent council, the scheme has been revised to include a school (pictured left) in lieu of part of the affordable housing provision incorporated in the original proposal.

It was agreed that this facility would best address the most pressing needs of the community and would provide much needed infrastructure that would support the development itself as well as the wider community.

The school design concept is based around optimising the functional requirements of the school whilst addressing the specific constraints of the available site to achieve an architectural solution which is fully integrated with the development.

The design was developed with Brent’s Education Officers and in conjunction with Mr R. Lanwarne - their approved Design Consultant. His final report, included in a later chapter of this report, was produced following a series of design meetings and subsequent modifications. On receipt of planning permission, it is anticipated that the design will be further developed in conjunction with an approved panel of end users.

In terms of functionality, the school meets the spatial requirements set out by BB99 for a two FE primary school accommodating 420 pupils as well as providing a nursery accommodating 60 part time places 5 full time places.

In order to meet the recommended areas for external play (for confined sites) we have developed a solution where the roof becomes an accessible ‘play deck’ with good solar aspect and minimal overshadowing. This becomes one of the main architectural features of the design which has further benefits the overall scheme in providing visual interest and amenity to the adjacent residential development.
